GENERAL INFORMATION AND HISTORY OF ST. MICHAEL SCHOOL
St. Michael School is located in Southern Illinois in the small rural town of Radom. We are a Catholic school solely supported through a relatively low tuition rate, parish subsidy and over twenty fundraisers. We are a fully accredited school recognized by the Diocese of Belleville and the State of Illinois. The town of Radom has a population of about 400 (four hundred) people (2000 census). There are thirty-six families in the school with a parish family of 250 (two hundred fifty) households.
The church and school are the focal point of this predominantly farming/blue collar community. The school was established in 1874 and was physically built by many of the ancestors of the families who attend today. The majority of our students are children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of former graduates of St. Michael School. On our faculty three of our five full time teachers are alumni of St. Michael School. The cornerstone for the current school building was laid in 1966. Our present enrollment is over 50 pre-k through eighth grade students. Pre-school is an all day program on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Our teachers teach two grades per room. (Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten, First and Second Grade, Third and Fourth Grade, Fifth and Sixth Grade and Seventh and Eighth Grade) We have eight adult volunteers who work in the building every week augmenting the education of our students. We have a part-time aide who works each day the pre-kindergarten students are here. We have a member of the St. Louis Symphony who comes to work with the students a few times a month on music and other volunteers who help out or teach our students computer skills, scrapbooking, etc. The full time principal works as our Accelerated Reading Coordinator and Response to Intervention facilitator.
Our curriculum consists of the basic subjects of Religion, Language Arts (English, Vocabulary, Spelling, Phonics, Reading), Computer Science, Handwriting, Math, Social Studies, Science, and Physical Fitness. Art, Music, and Technology are also included in the curriculum. An optional Human Sexuality Program called Family Life Program is taught in grades 5-8. Parents have the option to excuse their child/children from the class. Parents who excuse their child/children from the program are expected to teach it in their homes.
St. Michael School exists to be a continuum in the mission of Jesus Christ by proclaiming the gospel and teaching the doctrine and moral standards of the Church. Together with the Pastor, the dedication of the teachers, and committed parents, out students are provided the opportunity to develop to their full potential as a whole person. As they receive a quality academic education, they also grow in faith awareness, which will direct their lives to be developed socially, intellectually, and spiritually. With the continued help and cooperation of the parishioners of St. Michael’s Church, the families, students, staff and the community; we hope to continue to offer a future for the good of the community, the country and the Catholic Church.
